2. Piezo inkjet technology vs. DoD inkjet: which fits my carton line?
Piezo inkjet technology uses a piezoelectric crystal to push ink. It handles a wider range of inks and gives higher resolution, but printheads can be more sensitive to air bubbles and maintenance. DoD inkjet is a broader category—drop-on-demand. Piezo is one type of DoD; thermal and valvejet are others. If a supplier uses 'DoD inkjet' as a catch-all, ask which actuator they mean. For simple date codes, a valvejet or thermal inkjet coder might be enough. For high-resolution graphics on porous corrugated, piezo inkjet technology is usually the better fit. But if you need photo-quality images on coated board, an inkjet coder probably isn't the right tool. That's a job for digital press or flexo.
3. How do I vet an industrial inkjet printer supplier?
Ask for local service response times, spare parts stock, and three references in your substrate. Not references from brochures—actual phone numbers. I keep a simple scorecard: uptime guarantee, service radius, printhead lead time, ink shelf life, software updates. The spreadsheet said go with the cheaper supplier in 2024. My gut said stick with the one that answered a 6 a.m. service call. We went with my gut. Later learned the cheaper option had three-week lead times on replacement printheads. Per FTC advertising guidelines, claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence (ftc.gov). If a supplier says 'zero maintenance,' treat that as a red flag, not a spec. 6. How do I test print quality before signing?
Send your actual substrate. Not a sample board the supplier has in the demo room. Run your worst-case artwork: small fonts, dense barcodes, high-speed line. Check adhesion with tape, rub, and moisture tests. I'm not 100% sure every buyer does this, but we now require a two-day onsite trial. The cost is usually a few thousand dollars, but it's cheaper than a line that can't hit your barcode grade. Ask for print samples from a reference site, not a lab. Take this with a grain of salt: if the supplier won't let you test on your board, that's a deal-breaker for me.
7. What contract terms protect a buyer?
